"Summer at C of I: Understanding the Banjo"

"Summer at C of I: Understanding the Banjo"
A community course taught by Professor Scott Knickerbocker at The College of Idaho (Caldwell)
Cost: $120

We will study the history and evolution of the banjo, from its roots among African slaves to contemporary pickers. We will examine the significance of the banjo in American culture at large as well as specifically within its various genres: minstrel, old-time, Dixieland, bluegrass, newgrass and more. Professor Knickerbocker will supplement lectures and discussion with many audio examples--both recorded and live on his own banjo--as well as visual images and video clips.

The course costs $120 and will occur the three evenings of July 13-15 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) at The College of Idaho in Caldwell, with a culminating concert by Scott at The Bird Stop Coffee House in Caldwell on Saturday, July 18th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. (concert is free). The course is open to all ages, and one need not be currently enrolled at the college. No musical experience is necessary.
