"Summer at C of I: Understanding the Banjo"

"Summer at C of I: Understanding the Banjo"
A community course taught by Professor Scott Knickerbocker at The College of Idaho (Caldwell)
Cost: $120

We will study the history and evolution of the banjo, from its roots among African slaves to contemporary pickers. We will examine the significance of the banjo in American culture at large as well as specifically within its various genres: minstrel, old-time, Dixieland, bluegrass, newgrass and more. Professor Knickerbocker will supplement lectures and discussion with many audio examples--both recorded and live on his own banjo--as well as visual images and video clips.

The course costs $120 and will occur the three evenings of July 13-15 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) at The College of Idaho in Caldwell, with a culminating concert by Scott at The Bird Stop Coffee House in Caldwell on Saturday, July 18th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. (concert is free). The course is open to all ages, and one need not be currently enrolled at the college. No musical experience is necessary.

For more info and to register, visit www.collegeofidaho.edu or call 208-459-5074.

If you plan to register for the course, PLEASE DO SO BY JULY 8TH!

Camp opens Thursday afternoon with registration and an informal evening kickoff session. Classes will occur all day Friday and Saturday, with concerts and jamming in the evenings and a wrap up session on Sunday morning.

    About the instructors:

Jason Homey has been playing 5-string banjo (both clawhammer and 3 finger style) since 1989. He is a two-time first place winner of the Western Canadian Banjo Championships and a long-term member of the Celtic/Old-Time/Bluegrass/Rock-band 'The Clumsy Lovers'. Since moving to Boise in the Fall of 2011, Jason has kept busy with an increasingly full schedule of banjo, mandolin, and guitar students. He has many years of experience teaching banjo workshops. Since March of 2012, Jason has been leading a well attended weekly beginner jam for the Idaho Bluegrass Association . For samples of Jason's playing (which includes Clawhammer, Scruggs-style and more), check out http://cdbaby.com/cd/jasonhomey2

Scott Knickerbocker has played clawhammer banjo for 20 years. He plays banjo, fiddle, and guitar both solo and with the Hokum Hi-Flyers, an old-time string band that performs regularly in Boise and beyond, including their regular "Hokum Hoedown" square dance series. Their album "The Original Hokum Hi-Flyers" is available for sale at The Record Exchange in Boise and at any of their gigs. For more information, see their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/HokumHiFlyers. Scott is Associate Professor of English and Environmental Studies at The College of Idaho. His book Ecopoetics: The Language of Nature, the Nature of Language was published in 2012 by the University of Massachusetts Press, and his essay "Green Banjo: The Ecoformalism of Old-Time Music" was published in The Oxford Handbook of Ecocriticism in 2014.
